  1. NOT Plug-n-play, but DEFINITELY more LIGHT 4 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Dec 2017

I purchased the H1 R3 Lamp in the hopes of getting more light out of the low beam on my 2004 R1150GS. I understood that because of the nature of the cooling mesh required for the lamp, I would have to modify the rear lamp cover and wiring a bit. It took more than I had anticipated. YMMV, but after drilling a 1.125" diameter hole in the back of my lamp cover and threading the cooling mesh through the rectangular slot, I was still a good 1/2" away from having the cap meet the housing. In the end, the body of the lamp itself stuck half way out through the hole in the rear cover, and I sealed it with a few (4) turns of self-sealing silicone tape. The ungainly wiring tucked up and out of the way nicely, though the wire mesh is a bit unsightly. Bottom line? It was more work than I had anticipated, but definitely worth the effort. I see significantly better light. It's now on par with automotive light in terms of distance and coverage. Color is definitely more white than it's halogen counterpart, but not racer-boy blue.
